The National Sheriffs' Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among those in the criminal justice field. NSA is a key player in shaping national policy on critical criminal justice and homeland security issues important to the nation's sheriffs in the halls of Congress and at the White House.
NSA is lead by an Executive Committee and Board of Directors comprised of members of NSA who are currently holding the elected position of Office of Sheriff. The Executive Committee has supervision, control, and direction of the affairs of the Association and shall be Trustees of the Corporation. The Board of Directors annually reviews the Association's progress and outlines the policies that guide the Association's activities.
Message from the President
Sheriff Paul H. Fitzgerald
I am honored to be the 70th President of the National Sheriffs’ Association. I am resolved to work hard for you and for the NSA. I stand ready to give everything that I have to give, to serve with you, and to serve you.
In this year, I will focus on a number of issues that are critical to the future of the NSA and the Office of Sheriff. I will continue the fight to preserve the Office of Sheriff and keep alert to any new attacks to the Office. With the backing of some 3,083 sheriffs, those who wish to do the Office harm may think twice before tackling you in your quest to remain as sheriff.
I have been very active in the D Bock debates for the last several years. We are making headway but it is a long fight. The D Block issue is one that I will continue to pursue as President and even after my year is up (if necessary). Our countries’ first responders need to have the broadband spectrum to ensure interoperability for nationwide broadband communications.
NSA continues to advocate for an enhanced border security initiative – particularly to provide assistance to allow local law enforcement agencies to hire additional personnel dedicated to securing the borders. This will quickly get boots on the ground until the federal government can provide necessary personnel along the borders. NSA also strongly supports the continuance of the 287(g) program and expansion of the Secure Communities program; both aimed at optimizing the criminal alien removal process. Finally, the NSA continues to advocate strongly for significant funding for State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) funding. SCAAP is a reimbursement program for local governments that shoulder the costs associated with processing and detaining illegal aliens – which is a federal responsibility. I will support these endeavors on behalf of NSA and will keep you abreast of any significant changes.
As sheriffs, we have the potential and the people behind us to provide a powerful voice in Congress, in the White House, as well as in our communities. I plan to explore the options of what all 3,083 sheriffs of this nation can do in a combined effort.
I hope you will join me by calling your Senators and Members of Congress when NSA asks you to. Urge them to support the legislation on the D Block, on the Federal Hatch Act, and on the other matters important to NSA, to you, and your community.
I will be traveling to as many state associations as possible and look forward to meeting and working with all sheriffs across our great country. I want to hear from you about your specific issues and how NSA can help you. I invite all sheriffs to become actively involved with NSA through committee work and by working with their Federal and State Senators and Legislators.
